about

All of the proceeds from this album will be donated to the National Queer and Trans Therapists of Color Network.

Mental health and wellness has been a deeply important issue to me for a long time, and I have done what I can to support a few organizations that truly mean a lot to me in this field. However, I would be remiss not to acknowledge that like so many other issues facing this generation, BIPOC are disproportionately affected by financial strain, limited resources and cruel stereotyping that prevents access to mental health services and wellness. Furthermore, this disparity becomes much wider for LGBTQ+ individuals of color, since these communities face the history of cisnormativity and heteronormativity in addition to that of white supremacy when seeking help for their mental well being. Even with access to therapy and other resources, the ever present lack of representation in the field of psychology makes it even more difficult for Queer POC to find a counselor that understands their personal experiences.

This cause is especially critical in light of the current crises that we are living through, but it is by no means a recent development. It is no coincidence that black/african american adults are twenty percent more likely to report serious psychological distress than white adults. We sincerely hope that this effort will provide some positive momentum for the ongoing movement to provide those who have been, or are currently underserved with both short and long term mental health support.

I’ve cited here a link to the NQTTCN website, a mega-list of mental health resources for BIPOC, and an article that I found particularly helpful for understanding this topic.

Mental health matters. LGBTQ+ lives matter. Black lives matter.
